ADDITIONAL HELP INFORMATION:
When searching by Keywords:
- Separate multiple keywords with Boolean operators 'and', 'or', or 'not' (caps not necessary) if you don't want the search engine to search for the keywords next to each other.
- End verbs with 'ing' ('running', not 'run').
- Use an asterisk (*) for wildcard searches ('danc*' returns 'dance', 'dancer', 'dancing', etc.).
- Multiple keywords entered with a space between them will be searched for as a phrase, not as separate keywords (e.g., 'colonial architecture', 'road sign', 'birds in flight'). However, if you're searching for a phrase that contains 'and' (e.g., 'rock and roll'), you need to put the phrase in quotes so that the search engine doesn't read the 'and' as a Boolean operator.
- Also, if you are searching for Maine, you need to put the word Maine in quotes like this: “Maine” otherwise you will get all the images which are keyworded with ‘main street’ as well.
- Keywords are not case-sensitive: it doesn't matter whether you use caps or lowercase, or any combination of the two.
- Trademarked words are not used as keywords.
- Try concepts ('communication', 'success', 'teamwork').
When Using multiple keywords
1. Boolean searching (using 'and', 'or' and 'not')
- If you're searching for multiple keywords that aren't a phrase, you should use Boolean operators ('and', 'or' or 'not') between the words. Boolean searching allows you to narrow or widen your search results.
Example: 'flower and close-up not rose' will find close-up images of flowers, but will omit close-ups of roses.
2. Phrase searching.
- To search for a phrase, simply enter the phrase: 'colonial architecture', 'road sign', 'birds in flight'.
Some keywords may also be entered as phrases, such as 'colonial architecture', 'road sign' and 'birds in flight'.
3. Wildcard searching.
- The wildcard character '*' may be used to truncate a keyword and broaden your search. Example: ski*The asterisk matches a string of characters and will find all images with the keywords 'ski', 'skiing', 'skier', and also 'skipper', 'skirt' and any other keywords beginning with the letters 'ski'. Wildcards may also be used when searching by image number.
4. Phrase searching.
- Some keywords may also be entered as phrases, such as 'colonial architecture', 'road sign' and 'birds in flight'. Be careful performing this type of search because it is very limiting and will lessen the likelihood of returning very many results.
When searching by Image number:
- Select “Image Number” as the proper radio button.
- Enter the eight-digit number.
- Click on ‘SEARCH’ to perform your query and you will be shown results where you can view the image.
